Global Voices Potluck 4/28

Global Voices will have a potluck on 4/28! :)

We will begin setting up at 6:30, please come early if you can.

Potluck definition: a party where everyone brings food and drinks to share (food specifically from your culture is very much desired!). :)

There's no need to cook if you don't want to, grocery store items are fine! Bringing nothing is also fine! :) The potluck will be held at our usual meeting place.

*4/28 is our last meeting this semester.

*If you are interested in meeting over the summer, please let me know!
(I know people may be in and out of town, so that's fine.)

I'm attaching a link and lyrics below to a beautiful Native American Cherokee morning song that we sang last week. It's been in my head every morning since then! :)
Take care! -Jennifer :)

We n' de ya ho, We n' de ya ho,
We n' de ya, We n' de ya Ho ho ho ho,
He ya ho, He ya ho, Ya ya ya

Translation - We n' de ya ho

Freely translated:
"A we n'" (I am), "de" (of), "Yauh" --the-- (Great Spirit), "Ho" (it is so).

Written as: A we n' de Yauh ho (I am of the Great Spirit, Ho!).

This language stems from very ancient Cherokee

Translation by David Michael Wolfe who is an Eastern Virginia Cherokee and a cultural historian.
Enjoy! It's a great way to wake up! :)

Global Voices Info & "Theme Song"

The Purpose of Global Voices:

§  To be an informal place where people from diverse backgrounds can come together to socialize and enjoy singing multicultural music.
§  To promote intercultural awareness, respect, and understanding – to break down intercultural barriers and to help us see each other as fellow human beings.
§  To have fun!!

"Theme Song":

"We Are The World" (Chorus only)

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me!

"We Are the World" is a song and charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.

Global Voices Update :)

Hello! :)

Last week (4/7) we had a very nice meeting where we learned some multicultural children's songs. Children's songs are fun and easy to learn, as well as a gateway to each country's language and culture.

Here is the update for this coming week's meeting (4/14)... (Please note, our final potluck and meeting will be on 4/28)

Hello everyone! :)
The journalism student from PSU plans to come this Tuesday. As much attendance as possible would really be helpful. Here is their intention:

"For the interviews, I'd need at least two. One definitely with you and I'd really like an interview with a participant about their experience with the group and the reason they've joined. I would definitely do these either before or after the meeting so that I don't interrupt and for the meeting itself I'd be acting as a fly on the wall with a camera with the goal of not being distracting or really even that noticed." (The video will only be shown to their professor and classmates.)
If any of you are willing to be briefly interviewed, please come a little early or be willing to stay a little after the meeting so this can be done. Thank you for your participation!
Also, if you aren't comfortable with being filmed, please come anyway. You can sit outside the view of the camera. At least one member is already planning to do this.

We will be meeting in our usual location at the church (downstairs).
Singing multicultural songs about springtime is one of our themes this week. If you're able to come, feel free to share some songs about springtime with me. If you know one or more, please send me a link to the song (youtube etc.) and also a link to the lyrics/music. Lyrics only is fine. Please send the links by 8 pm Monday (tomorrow) night. Even if you can't come, suggestions are welcome.

I hope to see as many of you as possible on Tuesday night! Take good care, Jennifer :)

P.S. We have decided to have our final potluck at our last meeting on 4/28 at the church.

Global Voices Meeting 3/24/15

Hello everyone! :)

I'm happy to say I'm feeling better now. I haven't sung much recently though, so we'll see how that goes!

I look forward to meeting tomorrow night at our usual time and location - 7:00-8:30 pm at Faith United Church of Christ (no religious affiliation).

We will discuss when to have our next (and final) potluck for this semester. I'm thinking 4/21 or 4/28, depending on everyone's availability...

*A few notes:

- We will NOT be meeting on 3/31. I will be out of town.

- We will resume on 4/7, but there's a slight location change for that night only. We will meet on the third floor of the church. Enter through the same door and go upstairs instead of downstairs. I will have signs posted.

Hopefully the weather will start warming up soon!!

See you soon, Jennifer :)

GV Potluck Party! 2/24/15 :)

Hello! :)

Last night GV had a potluck party as part of our weekly meeting. It was lots of fun! I think that's the most people we've had so far - it must have been the food! ;)  (see pictures below)

We enjoyed dishes from Japan, Korea, Germany, and America. It was quite yummy!

We all got to know each other better, in a more casual, social environment. I think having potlucks once a month is a great idea. I'm looking forward to the other two this semester:

March 17 and April 14

After we had some yummy food we sang a few fun multicultural children's songs from a book called "Wee Sing Around The World" ("Wee" is correct - meaning small children). This cute little book and CD has 45 children's songs from many different places.

We enjoyed getting help from our German members with: "Alle Meine Entchen" (All My Little Ducklings). They confirmed that "Alle Meine Entchen" is learned by most German children around the age of 5. We also consulted with them about a Swiss Hiking Song titled "Weggis Zue." It turns out the Swiss language in the song resembles German, but is pronounced differently and not well understood by Germans. The Swiss song was funny because it involved yodeling - which is a learned skill and something all of us had trouble with! ;)

Unfortunately we ran out of time and we couldn't do any more, but our next meetings will include children's songs from Japan and South Korea, as well as other places. I'll probably mix the children's songs up with other traditional songs as well. I look forward to our future meetings!! :)

(Note: GV will not be meeting during Spring Break (3/10) or 3/31.)

Reflections about GV Meeting on 2/10/15

During our second meeting this semester (2/10/15), we discussed the types of songs we would like to learn as a group. We discussed learning multicultural children's songs (because they're fun and easy!), as well as current pop songs from different countries. In addition, we discussed other options...like learning traditional folk songs and songs that most people know in each country. Based on the feedback, it seems the group wants to learn multicultural children's songs and well-known traditional/folk songs. They don't seem to care which countries we learn about. So far our group has people from South Korea, Japan, and Germany, as well as Americans. I'm hoping that some of the members will volunteer to share their country/culture/language/music with the group and teach us some of the songs they know. I'm still working on getting volunteers for this! Hint, hint... ;)

During our meeting on 2/10, I started our traditional/folk song journey with American songs. We learned the songs at the bottom of this post. I would say almost all Americans grow up singing America the Beautiful and This Land is Your Land, as well as the Star Spangled Banner - all of which are more patriotic style songs. The other two, are folk songs that many people are familiar with, but not all. The main chorus of You Are My Sunshine is well known, but not the rest of the lyrics. Keep on the Sunny Side was featured in the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000).

We all had fun learning these songs and learning more about traditional American folk music. We planned on having a potluck on 2/17, but it was too cold, so we postponed to 2/24, which was last night. In my next post I will share all about that! :)

·         “America the Beautiful” – Katharine Lee Bates (lyrics); Samuel A. Ward (music) – 1895/1910
·         “This Land is Your Land” – Woody Guthrie (written in 1940, published in 1945)
·         “You Are My Sunshine” – Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell - 1939
·         “Keep on the Sunny Side” – Ada Blenkhorn (lyrics); J. Howard Entwisle (music) - 1899
